Selfcare is not selfish

You can’t pour from an empty cup. You may have heard this saying before, and it highlights the importance of selfcare for our ability to function in all aspects of life.

Our society focuses on speed and productivity, making us feel guilty for prioritizing our own wellbeing. However, selfcare is not at all selfish – it is part of the answer how we can better cope with life’s stressors and challenges.

Every single day demands our attention and energy; whether it is our families, jobs, household responsibilities, or communities. Without regularly and consciously replenishing our energy resources, we cannot perform or support others, and we risk negative consequences for our health and wellbeing, such as chronic stress and burnout.

It is therefore important to shift our views of selfcare as a luxury and see it as a necessity, a non-negotiable. True selfcare is about knowing your limits, setting healthy boundaries, getting enough sleep and rest, nurturing your body and soul, engaging in activities that make you happy. All of this will help maintain your health and wellbeing, and enable you to also be there for others.

Selfcare requires mindfully checking in with yourself and asking yourself how you’re doing and what you need.

Ask yourself these questions:

🌿How often do you put your own needs before those of others?

🌿How often do you eat healthy, nourishing food?

🌿How often do you make time for exercise?

🌿How well do you sleep most nights?

🌿How often do you use healthy coping mechanisms over unhealthy ones?

🌿How happy & satisfied are you in life?
